Press Release: Actors Margot Kidder and Tantoo Cardinal among 60 Arrested at White House Pipeline Protest

WASHINGTON, DC — The iconic Canadian actors Margot Kidder and a Tantoo Cardinal were arrested this morning at 11:30 AM in Washington, DC as part of an ongoing sit-in at the White House to pressure President Obama to deny the permit for a massive new tar sands oil pipeline. “I can’t think of a more important place to be,” said Kidder, who is best known for her role as Lois Lane in four of the original Superman movies. “President Obama has the chance here to do the right thing and stop this pipeline. I’m here to help make sure he does it.” “It’s an honor to be here with so many people from across the US,” said Tantoo Cardinal, the iconic indigenous actor best known for her roles in Legends of the Fall, Dances with Wolves, and Smoke Signals. Cardinal was born in the capitol of the tar sands, Ft. McMurray, Alberta. “This is about protecting our land, our water, and our climate. The tar sands destruction has to stop.” Tantoo Cardinal and Margot Kidder at the White House Protest Before Being Arrested Photo credit: Milan Ilnyckyj, TarSandsAction.org Cardinal and Kidder gathered with a crowd of over 150 people in Lafeyette Square park this morning to hear from environmental author, Bill McKibben, who is spearheading the protests. In an effort to “deter future participants,” the DC Park Police had held McKibben and 55 other participants from last Saturday’s demonstration in jail for two nights before dropping all charges and releasing them on Monday afternoon. Sunday and Monday’s protestors were released after being arrested, taken to a Park Police station, and paying $100 fine for “disobeying a police order.” “When we were in jail, the only thing we wanted was more company,” said McKibben to a cheering crowd this morning. “Your work has helped make this the most important environmental question President Obama has to make before the 2012 election. And we’ll be here every day this week and next to make sure he makes the right call.” Tomorrow, a group of 20 Gulf Coast residents will join the White House protest to try and prevent another BP style disaster in America’s heartland, over one of the country’s largest sources of fresh drinking water. President Obama will decide later this year on TransCanada’s permit for the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline, which will send 900,000 barrels a day of the world’s dirtiest oil to US refineries, allowing further development of the Alberta tar sands. The pipeline would pass through Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. Mining oil from tar sands creates three times more carbon emissions than conventional oil extraction. An equal amount of biomass on land [the forests], cannot absorb an additional amount of carbon from burned coal layers too. also it is still better to have your carbon in instable reservoirs on the Earth’s surface, TREES.. than to have it in the air [in a much more stable state: CO2 and we al know that too much carbon is dangerous… it is in fact pollution and too much can kill us.. it most likely wiped out the dinosaurs in a natural incident such as volcanoes, forest fires,, probably coupled with lack of good water, food, sunlight and disease. Its time to transition to using more solar. some say it is ineffiecient and expensive to start up, but we are heading in solar pwers direction and A 13 year old came up with a new design for solar power (a tree design) that is 50% more efficient.

Typo alert – you refer to Tantoo Cardinal as “a Tantoo Cardinal” in the first line of the story.

Water, Air, and Our Grandmother Earth is threatened by our dirty thirst for oil.instead of wanting the cleanest water in America. The simple truth is we all need clean food, water, air here on this Grandmother Earth.
We need to lose the oil thrust that is killing all life. Remember we are all CARETAKERS while we are here at this moment. You cannot destroy clean drinking water to save the machine.

  35. Guitarman says:

What a couple of twits…what the hell do any of you know about the OIL sands? Not to mention at least you would be getting oil from a source you’re unlikely to make war with (unless you begin to eye-ball our H2O too much). Maybe using the OIL sands for a reliable energy source would make it so you don’t need to make war in oil rich countries under the guise of human rights and other b.s. reasons you give to invading other nations.

  36. Kamala says:

Thank you for being warrior women for the rest of us, and for the future. I will try to do more, with you as my inspiration.

  37. Guest says:

I think people are forgetting that North American Native American Peoples are not Canadian or American and do not recognise the Borders, Provinces or the gov’t but recognise all of North America as their “Homeland” that was taken from them. The gov’ts today still isolate these great peoples and still enslave them by denying their rights to royalties, etc. Food for thought people. Learn your history.

  43. Moran says:

Tantoo Cardinal was born in Northern Alberta and has the right to be upset about the destruction of her homeland and to speak out against it. Any “celebrity” she holds is secondary to her being a person of conscience.

    coal industry ..hahahahhhahaha

  45. Nick Halsey says:

Some of you talk like spoiled children who only wants what you want when you want it. This is the same attitude of your ancestors when you got here on this continent, and they were all just as crazy as you are now. This is just an easy remendy to get a few more years of oil. You have forgotten what happened recently in Gulf of Mexico. Canada’s Keystone Excel Pipeline has already had 12 leaks in 12 months. The time to look for alternative ideas, such as, alternative energy is now, because if this pipeline goes through it will pollute and destroy not only North America. It will be too late after the oil is depleted, because this Pipeline will criss-cross America. It could be the beginning of the end. Your hypnotized by what you hear instead of doing your own research. Tell me the is the safest pipeline remendy when it already has a destructive track record.

  46. Nick Halsey says:

Big thumbs down to your idiot thoughts to minimize the main subject. Pipeline will dramatically pollute America, and the World, all for a few more years of dirty oil, instead of looking for the right thing to do, that has to do with Clean Energy.
This is not a competition of Celebrities. Go back to your magazines tor that kind of interest.
We are talking about helping to destroy the Climate with this this type of destruction.
